Transmission Tag (Manual)

Transmission Tag (Automatic)

Rear Differential Tag

The differential tag contains two rows of numbers. Here's a typical exlample, with
a breakdown of the numbers.

S   =  Sterling differential
260 =  Model number
A   =  Revision identifier

3 27 = 3:27 Gear ratio. If it was limited slip, the number would contain the letter L, as in 3L27.
75    =  Ring gear size. 7.5 inches.
0D04 =  Build date
0   =  Last digit in year of manufacture. In this case, 2000
D   =  Month of manufacture. A=January, B=February, C=March, etc.
04  =  Day of manufacture

Computer Code

The computer code is on adhesive-backed tags (example below) stuck on the passenger side door jam and behind the passenger side kick panel on the computer itself.

Other I.D. Tags

The engine number (the last eight numbers of the vehicle identification number) is stamped on machined pads on the engine block, transmission, frame and transfer case (if equipped).
The engine code and build date are on a sticker on the valve cover.

The Build Sheet

The build sheet is an 8.5"x11" computer printout used at all stations along the assembly line to specify the configuration of a particular vehicle.   It contains the VIN and a rotation number (the position of the car on the line that day) plus an alphanumeric code for each item to be installed on the chassis, such as the engine type, transmission type, braking system, audio system, EEC model, body and trim colors, etcetera.

You may be lucky enough to find a build sheet in your Mustang.   They have been found under the rear seats, under the carpeting, and under the trunk mat.   The example to the left was found stuffed between the rear bumper cover and the chassis on my 2000 Mustang.   It indicates that the car started down the assembly line on Friday, April 7, 2000 at 10:01:06 AM, and that its rotation number was 0038, meaning that it was the 38th car built that day.
